It must have been about six years ago. Dieter Kloecker and I were having one of our regular repertoire discussions, and he put the score of a clarinet concerto on my desk: »This is an absolute insider’s tip. A clarinet concerto from the late romantic era of 1885 (that already a small sensation), highly virtuosic, highly melodious as if it were by Lehár, and then – to top things off – from Holland!« These were Kloecker’s words when he presented Gottfried Hendrik Mann’s concerto to me. We of course incorporated it into our project planning, but Kloecker’s ensuing illness and death meant that he was unable to record it himself. He nevertheless still had time to introduce this work to Sebastian Manz, the young rising star of the clarinet world. It is the rebirth of a genuine masterpiece that originally enjoyed great renown and was played from Russia to America. For unknown reasons it at some point or other simply vanished from the not really all that extensive repertoire for clarinet virtuosos. We have also taken the opportunity to bring to light other works by this composer, who unfortunately has been completely forgotten.
