The release also marks the 80th anniversary of a giant in contemporary music; his fellow countryman Per Nørgård. When Jakob Kullberg presents his debut release as a soloist on a recording, it is only fitting that it should be on both a CD and a special vinyl edition. Kullberg is a no less than a musical firework in his approach, and without doubt the Scandinavian cellist today with most impact on the contemporary scene. Per Nørgård: Momentum Per Nørgård and Jakob Kullberg began their collaboration fifteen years ago and it has developed every year since resulting in many works from Nørgård that seem tailor fit to Kullberg's versatile playing. The evident ferocity of this exchange has seen the breaking of altogether new musical terrain, in Momentum strikingly through the cello's improvised cadenzas in the first and fourth movements of the concerto. Arne Nordheim: Tenebrae Written for and premiered by Mstislav Rostropovich, Nordheim's grand cello concerto is perhaps best known through its recording by Truls Mørk. Kullberg performs a new orchestration of the work, for the smaller sinfonietta ensemble. The title denotes darkness and night - designating the Roman Catholic service of the same name. The cello assumes the principle role in an account of some of the great existential themes. Kaija Saariaho: Amers The cello holds a prominent place in Saariaho's oeuvre. This recording marks the beginning of the collaboration between Kullberg and the composer and is likely to be a collaboration worth noticing. The title means 'sea marks' or 'bouys', and the marine immediate inspiration is audible in the sweeping depths of the soundscape. The cello is naturally central to the sonic properties of the work; from the fully-voiced tone and harmonics to the rough sound generated by the technique of sul ponticello.
